WHAT THE MIRRORS KEPT

When Melanie Norcross inherits her estranged mother's flat, she finds every mirror carefully covered. Behind one of them waits a version of the past that feels warmer, kinder and impossibly real.

At first, the differences seem harmless: a childhood room rearranged, a familiar voice, a memory of affection she never received. But the memories begin to linger after the glass is covered. Objects shift. Photographs disagree with themselves. And Melanie's daughter, Michaela, becomes increasingly frightened by what her mother is willing to believe.

As the boundaries between remembrance and reality weaken, Melanie must decide how much of a life she would surrender for the childhood she always wanted. The mirrors offer something irresistible: a chance to remember being loved differently.

But every reflection asks for more than she realises, and some doors are easier to open than to close.
