Some stories matter too much to leave unfinished.

Eleven-year-old Milena Majewska knows she is dying.

In a hospice in southern Poland, her world has become smaller: a hospital bed, devoted parents, familiar nurses and a notebook containing a story she desperately wants to finish.

Then an unexpected visitor appears.

A nameless ghost has spent an unknowable number of years appearing beside people approaching death. It offers no promises of heaven, no comforting explanations and no answers about what comes afterwards.

It has never needed to stay long enough to become attached.

Until Milena.

Rather than asking the ghost to explain death, Milena asks it to help her write.

The arrangement is hardly peaceful. Milena is stubborn, funny and fiercely protective of her story. The ghost is relentlessly logical, irritatingly precise and convinced that most of her fictional characters are making terrible decisions.

Yet through their arguments, revisions and quiet conversations, something extraordinary develops.

Friendship.

As Milena's strength begins to fade, finishing her notebook becomes increasingly important. But the ghost, discovering what it means to care for someone it cannot save, starts finding one more improvement, one more question and one more reason to postpone the final page.

Soon they must confront a painful truth.

Sometimes helping someone means allowing them to finish, even when you desperately want the story to continue.
